Brief History of Mercedes Benz

Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and BMW are the three best selling luxury automakers in the world and known as the “German Big 3″. Mercedes Benz is actually the luxury vehicle division of the multinational German Manufacturer Daimler AG.

Many wonder about the origin of the car’s name Mercedes. The inspiration for the name was the 10 year old daughter of Emil Jellinek, a distributor of the early Daimler cars. Jellinek was very successful at selling cars through his dealership in Nice, France. He was also successful at getting the Daimler factory to make modifications based on his input as he was so enthusiastic about the car and their best sales representative.

In 1900, Jellinek put down a huge retainer on a large order of custom cars from Daimler. He reserved exclusive rights to market the car and to name the car Mercedes. The car, which boosted a long wheelbase, more horsepower, lower center of gravity, and electric ignition, was a huge success.

In 1926, during the post-WWI era, the Benz and DMG companies merged in order to survive the depressive economic conditions. The company became Daimler Benz and the cars became Mercedes Benz.
